15: Schemes in the Silo

“I don’t see how that last part can work,” said Harold, frowning at a cross-sectional drawing of the Lightning Tower. “The Channeler is too big to extract that way.”

“You’ve never seen it,” said Kef.

“No. But Gabine said it fills this room.” Harold pointed to a windowless chamber near the top of the Lightning Tower, on the floor under the glass-domed room that crowned the whole structure. “She was very specific about the size. And as you can see, the room’s fifty feet wide.”

Kef glanced at Gabine. “Did you see the device?”

“No. They installed it after I was exiled, the scumbags.”

Kef shrugged. “Don’t worry. I know what it looks like, and it’ll be easy enough to move around, especially once we’ve breached the Tower. Any other objections?”

She’d spent the last hour defending the plan from Gabine and Harold’s critiques. Squine had stayed wordless. Probably too stressed about his role in it all.

“You trust the aristocrat?” asked Harold.

“I trust his greed. And I’m planning a visit before the heist. After that, I’ll trust his fear as well. Anything else?”

Their questions annoyed her. None of them knew the first thing about a heist. None of them knew how many years Kef had turned this scheme over in her mind. None of them knew why she was really doing this, either. She planned to keep it like that until the mission finished.

When no one voiced any more annoying questions, she stood, pulling on the ladder to haul her aching body up. “The city’s going to be hot today while they search for Harold. We’ll rest up here. When they can’t find you, they’ll assume I took you out of Zorith and the heat will ease. Tomorrow, we’ll move into position for the heist; we’ll need to set up our operations a few hours before Exoran’s party in the evening. Now, grab something to eat and have a rest. Keep as quiet as possible. We don’t know when the workers are going to walk overhead. I’ll go on first watch.”

Harold waddled around the walkway to the supply crates, where he set to work dragging spare cloaks over the metal floor to form bedding. Squine dove over the walkway’s railing, slicing into the water with barely a ripple or splash. He came up a few seconds later, floating on his back, those lidded yellow eyes gazing up at the ceiling. Gabine stayed where she was, watching Kef roll up the drawings.

“This whole affair reminds me of when I was young,” said Gabine. “Working in my studio, with my designers and my apprentices … you know, whenever we took in a new apprentice, I could always tell whether they’d make it, even before I was the boss.”

Kef slipped the drawings into a tube, then handed it to Gabine. “Good thing I’m not an apprentice.”

“All of them came into the office saying how much they cared about design,” continued Gabine, like she’d not even heard Kef. “How designing boats was all they ever wanted to do with their lives.
